Description:

Interviewer-administered questions for adults to determine when the participant last visited the dentist and the purpose of the visit. These questions may also be administered to an adult as a proxy for a child.

Protocol:

1. About how long has it been since {you/Sample Person} last visited a dentist? Include all types of dentists, such as, orthodontists, oral surgeons, and all other dental specialists, as well as dental hygienists.

Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.* The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don't know" response is provided.

*There are multiple modes to administer this question (e.g., paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted interviews).

Definition

Purpose

Professional dental care is necessary for the maintenance of oral health. The periodicity of visits to a dentist is a measure of access to dental health care and an indicator of a person's oral health status.

Selection Rationale

The questions from a national survey are useful in assessing the periodicity of professional dental health care services.
