Description:

These self-administered questions ask current and former smokers about their intention to quit smoking, details of past attempts to quit, and whether a health care professional advised the respondent to quit smoking.

Protocol:

1. Are you considering quitting smoking during the next 6 months?

[ ] Yes, plan to stop within next 6 months, but not within next 30 days

[ ] No, not thinking of quitting in next 6 months

2. In the past, have you ever made a serious attempt to quit smoking? That is, have you stopped smoking for at least one day or longer because you were trying to quit?

These questions are only asked of current or former smokers. In order to exclude nonsmokers, the Cancer Working Group recommends adding a filter question. The recommended filter question can be located in the PhenX Toolkit. Definition

Measure to determine intention to quit smoking and obtain details of past attempts to quit

Purpose

Intention to quit smoking is important to assess because of the effect of smoking on diagnosis of subsequent cancer.

Selection Rationale

It is well documented that quitting smoking can take multiple attempts. This protocol captures current and past efforts to quit smoking, including information on the use of prescription medicines, as well as whether the respondent has been advised by a health care professional to quit.
