Description:

A measure to assess high blood pressure during a current pregnancy.

Protocol:

Did you have (Have you had) any of these illnesses or complications during this pregnancy?

1. Toxemia including all of the following: high blood pressure, albumin (protein) in urine, and swelling of the ankles?

Diagnostic Criteria:

Blood pressure during pregnancy recorded at or above an average of 140 mmHg systolic or 90 on two or more seated blood pressure measured properly with well maintained equipment. There are four subcategories:

1. Chronic hypertension as presence of hypertension before the 20th week of gestation or persistent hypertension for longer than 12 weeks postpartum.

2. Gestational hypertension with hypertension first detected after 20 weeks of gestation without proteinuria.

3. Preeclampsia-eclampsia with new onset of hypertension in a previously normotensive woman accompanied by more than 300 mg proteinuria per 24 hours.

4. Preeclampsia superimposed on underlying hypertension.

Personnel and Training Required

An interviewer who is trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population is required. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.* The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don't know" response is provided.

*There are multiple modes to administer this question (e.g., paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted interviews).
