Description:

This protocol includes seven self-administered questions from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Respondents answer questions regarding the use of a needle to inject drugs not prescribed by a doctor.

Definition

This measure is a questionnaire to assess whether a respondent has ever used a needle to inject drugs not prescribed by a physician.

Purpose

This measure can be used to determine whether the participant has injected nonprescription drugs in his or her lifetime. Needles shared by injection drug users can transmit infectious diseases.

Selection Rationale

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a nationally represented survey that is well established and contains validated protocols.
