Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.

Equipment Needs

These questions can be administered in a computerized or non-computerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

Definition

A questionnaire to determine if the respondent has a history of kidney failure.

Purpose

The risk of developing kidney disease is correlated with family history of kidney disease as well as several conditions (e.g., hypertension) and diseases (e.g., diabetes). Diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States.

Selection Rationale

The protocol from the Strong Heart Study was vetted against similar protocols and chosen because it has been used in a major U.S. study and because the questions capture the date and history of kidney disease, history of kidney dialysis, and history of kidney transplantation.
