Definition

A questionnaire to screen for Parkinson’s disease.

Purpose

This measure can be used to screen participants quickly in large, population-based cohorts for the presence of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinsonism occurs in about 0.2% of the population, and the risk increases with age. Parkinsonism can be caused by genetics, vascular disease, certain medications, and environmental contaminants such as manganese dust, carbon monoxide, or pesticides (Aminoff et al., 2005).

Selection Rationale

This question from the Framingham Heart Study was selected because it has been used in a large US population-based study and subsequently validated as a screen for Parkinson’s Disease.
